As part of Clean Rivers Cooperative’s Quarterly Membership Training Program the Boom Rodeo provides a friendly competition environment which tests member skills in a live environment. The Boom Rodeo, first held in 1987, has consistently provided an opportunity for Membership to display and practice real world skills involved in oil spill response. Competitive stations include:
- – Deployment of local Geographic Response Plans (GRPs)
- – Waterside obstacle course in which participants navigate through a course while towing a length of boom
- – Corralling buoys simulating product in the water
- – Setup of portable shoreside storage which would be used in collection strategies
- – Man overboard safety training
- – Marine trivia
Each of these stations provide opportunities to complete critical deployment tasks and are all part of a scoring system that ensures safe and timely completion of these tasks. Scores are tabulated at the end of the event and winners are announced.
Congratulations to the winners of this year’s competition:
- NuStar Portland
- NuStar Vancouver
- TIE! Seaport and Kinder Morgan
